It's finally here, Hobbit fans.

The world premiere of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of three prequels to his Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, is taking place at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington, New Zealand.

MovieFIX has the live stream from the red carpet from 1.50pm (AEDT). Neil Finn will perform from 2pm, with celebrity arrivals from 2.30pm.

Director Peter Jackson will be joined by his huge ensemble cast including the likes of Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Hugo Weaving (Lord Elrond), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Martin Freeman (Bilbo), Andy Serkis (Gollum), and Richard Armitage (Thorin).

VIP guests include Avatar director James Cameron, Flight of the Conchords' Jermaine Clement, and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.

Australians will be able to see what the fuss is all about when The Hobbit hits cinemas on Boxing Day.
