Every year, extended trailers for 2013's blockbuster films premiere at the Super Bowl. This year the most anticipated were Fast and the Furious 6, Star Trek: Into Darkness and Marvel's latest addition to its universe since The Avenger's — Iron Man 3.

Self-described genius and billionaire Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and his partner-in-crime Virginia "Pepper" Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) are up against a new enemy called Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), the man responsible for blowing up their home.

In the trailer we see Tony and Pepper being blown back in a blast at Stark Enterprises, followed by an exploding aeroplane scene in which Iron Man attempts to save 13 people falling from the aircraft.

We also see glimpses of Australian actor Guy Pearce, who plays Aldritch Killain — the creator of the Extremis virus designed to increase the power of Iron Man's armour.

This is the first Marvel universe crossover film since The Avengers was released in 2012 and is based on the Extremis virus story arc written by Warren Ellis in the Iron Man (vol. 4) series of the comics. It has been adapted for the screen by Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black and Drew Pearce (who wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Godzilla reboot).

Check out the Super Bowl special look above, if only to see Robert's blue steel glare at the beginning.

Iron Man 3 hits Australian cinemas on April, 14, 2013. Vote 'want to see' on MovieBuzz here.
