A welcome action escape with Wahlberg

Dale Rolfe, MovieFix
A remake of the Icelandic thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam, Contraband is a welcome salve for the pain of mediocre action films on screen of late.

Mark Wahlberg trawls well-trodden territory as a reformed criminal forced back into the business to save his family. The results are spectacular and fun if predictable and improbable.

Tough, buff Chris Farraday (Wahlberg), once the best smuggler in New Orleans, is now a devoted family man with a ho-hum job in security. When his kid brother-in-law (Caleb Landry Jones) fumbles a smuggle of his own, Chris is dragged back into the high stakes business for one last run to pay off violent hillbilly drug dealer Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi).

Set aboard the claustrophobic confines of a super tanker making its way to Panama, the action feels novel even if the story isn't. Of course, Chris's foolproof plan quickly unravels as he manoeuvres through problems thrown up by drug cartels, deceptive allies and bad timing.

The film resorts to killing anonymous bad guys for the sake of the action playbook, but all the silliness is riotous fun. Kate Beckinsale as Chris's wife is given a bad makeover with frightful regrowth to convince us she's a tough chick, which she achieves most of the time, while Ribisi is dutifully slimy and repellent as the bad guy.

A little bit heist movie, a little bit action film, a little bit redemption story, Contraband isn't mould-breaking, but the pace is brisk and the tension sharp. While the cinematography aims for a gritty, shaky feel, the film is pure fun, thrill-seeking action.

Despite its predictable moments, Contraband is great leave-your-brain-at-the-door entertainment.

A lot of noise action and violence that adds up to nothing. Had I been on my own I would have walked out after half an hour and asked for my money back. I can't think of any thing in this film that hasn't been done a thousand times before, and done better in the other thousand films. Don't waste your time and money, see something else. I haven't forgotten to give it any stars, it isn't worth any.

too predictable, well worn and barely held together with less than believable action. The only differentiator from other dribble in this format is the tanker setting. Thought Marky Mark had more sense than to sign up for this.

Some of the acting was truely second rate. The plot was see through but the action, a bit over the top, made it watchable.

A remake of the Icelandic thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam – which nobody has seen so thankfully comparisons are not necessary – this Hollywood version sees Mark Whalberg’s ex-smuggler return to his previous life of crime in order to help free his brother-in-law (an unconvincing Caleb Landry Jones) from the debt of a moral-lacking drug kingpin (Giovanni Ribisi hamming it up). Also on board is the under-used Kate Beckinsale as Whalberg’s concerned wife, Ben Foster as a rehabilitated mate and J.K. Simmons in an absurd role as the Captain of the ship that hosts the bulk of the felony. There’s nothing in Baltasar Kormakur’s (who, bizarrely, was the star of the original) largely run-of-the-mill flick that will blow your mind – and the few moments of real awesomeness are in the trailer – but with a cracking soundtrack and a likeable central turn from Marky Mark, Contraband is a competent time-waster that hurtles along at such a pace you’ll not realise how daft the story was until after the credits roll

All the good things action betrayal love and just to cap it off a good story line so as in most cases no awards but it will pull more at the box office than those that did
