    Picture gallery: 2012 and other disasters


    Kudos to director Roland Emmerich for coming up with a new way to destroy the world in his new disaster flick 2012: solar flares that cause the Earth's crust to boil (or something), sending continents crumbling into the ocean and tsunamis crashing down on landmarks.

    Never mind that it makes zero sense — it's all just an excuse for some serious special effects.

    Movies have explored many ways of destroying the world: while apocalyptic solar flares are a relatively new development, other disasters include climate change, giant fireballs from space, and gold old alien invasion.
